- Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’, commonly known as Coral Bark Japanese Maple, is a striking deciduous tree known for its vibrant кораl red bark and elegant, layered form. The smooth branches glow brightest in fall and winter, creating a standout feature even when the tree is bare.
- In spring, fresh green leaves emerge with a soft, almost translucent quality, bringing a light and delicate feel to the garden. Through summer, the foliage remains a clean, bright green before turning warm shades of yellow to golden orange in fall, adding another season of interest.
- This tree has a naturally upright, vase shaped habit when young, gradually developing into a broader, more layered canopy with age. Its graceful structure makes it an excellent focal point in smaller gardens, courtyards, or near patios where its seasonal changes can be appreciated up close.
- Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’ performs best in partial shade, especially in warmer climates where protection from hot afternoon sun helps prevent leaf burn. It prefers rich, well drained soil and consistent moisture. Regular watering is important, particularly during establishment and in hotter conditions.
- It typically grows 15 to 25 feet tall and about 10 to 15 feet wide. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 8 and is hardy down to well below freezing temperatures. The foliage is deciduous. We see the 'Sangu Kaku' variety thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zones 9 and 10 for this tree.

- It is generally deer resistant, though young trees may need protection. Rabbits may occasionally nibble tender growth.
