Ficus microcarpa nitida, commonly known as Indian Laurel Fig, is widely used for creating fast, dense privacy screens in warm climates. It’s sometimes referred to as the “Hollywood Hedge” because of how often it’s used throughout Los Angeles to create full, enclosed privacy around homes and estates.

The foliage is made up of glossy, deep green leaves that form a thick, continuous canopy. When planted in rows, it quickly fills in to create a solid visual barrier, making it ideal for blocking views, reducing noise, and defining property lines.

What really sets it apart is its growth rate. It establishes quickly and can create a tall, dense screen much faster than many other plants. It can be maintained as a hedge or allowed to grow into full sized trees, depending on how it’s managed.

Because of its density, it creates a more complete screen compared to lighter, airier plants. This makes it especially useful along busy streets or where full privacy is needed.

Ficus microcarpa nitida grows best in full sun and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from regular watering while establishing, then becomes more drought tolerant over time.

It can grow quite large if left unpruned, often reaching 30 to 40 feet tall and wide. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost. The foliage is evergreen. 

One important consideration is its root system. Like many ficus species, it has aggressive, invasive roots that can lift pavement, damage walls, or impact nearby structures if planted too close.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers are not noticeable, as it is primarily grown for its foliage and screening ability.

Ficus microcarpa nitida fits especially well into Mediterranean, tropical, and urban garden designs, where it can be used for hedging, screening, and creating enclosed spaces.

Expert Tip:

I like using this when fast privacy is the priority, but it’s all about controlling it early. Keeping it pruned to a manageable height not only maintains the screen, but also helps keep the root system a bit more compact. I also make sure to give it proper spacing from hardscape upfront, because once it takes off, it’s not something you want to be correcting later. Consider a root barrier with these.
