Ficus repens, commonly known as Creeping Fig, is a fast growing, clinging vine that’s often used to cover walls, fences, and vertical surfaces. It has a strong ability to attach itself and create a dense, green layer that can completely transform a plain surface.

The foliage starts out with small, soft, heart shaped leaves that hug tightly to whatever it’s climbing. As the plant matures, it can develop larger, thicker leaves, especially if it grows outward without support.

When used on walls, it creates a smooth, almost living blanket of green that adds texture and softens hard surfaces. It’s a popular choice for adding a more established, aged look to a space.

It can also be used as a groundcover, though it’s most often valued for its vertical growth and ability to cover large areas relatively quickly.

Ficus repens grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. It benefits from regular watering while establishing, then becomes more tolerant of dry conditions once it’s rooted in.

It can spread extensively and climb many feet high depending on where it’s planted. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 11 and performs well in mild climates. The foliage is evergreen. 

One thing to be aware of is that it can become aggressive if not maintained. It may attach to surfaces like stucco or wood and can be difficult to remove once established.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers are not noticeable, as it is primarily grown for its foliage.

It is generally deer resistant, though occasional browsing may occur.

Ficus repens fits especially well into Mediterranean, courtyard, and vertical garden designs, where it can be used to cover walls and create a softer, more enclosed feel.

Expert Tip:

I like using this to soften large blank walls or fences, especially in courtyard spaces. It gives that mature, established look pretty quickly. Just be intentional about where you plant it, because once it grabs on and fills in, it’s not something you’ll want to constantly fight to control.
