Crassula capitella ‘Campfire’ is a low growing succulent that brings a strong hit of color without needing flowers. It’s known for its stacked, triangular leaves that shift from green to bright red and orange, especially when grown in full sun or during cooler weather.

The foliage forms loose, spreading mats that can fill in space over time. As it grows, the stems elongate and layer over each other, creating a slightly wild, natural look compared to tighter rosette succulents.

The color is what really makes it stand out. In the right conditions, it can take on a fiery red tone that lives up to its name, making it a great option for adding warmth and contrast to a planting.

It works well in rock gardens, containers, or as a groundcover in succulent plantings where you want something that will spread and create a strong visual layer.

Crassula ‘Campfire’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. For the best color, more sun is key. It is drought tolerant once established and should be watered sparingly.

It typically stays around 6 to 12 inches tall and can spread a couple of feet wide over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, tolerating temperatures down to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause mild irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

The flowers are small and not particularly showy.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance plantings.

Crassula capitella ‘Campfire’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, succulent, and modern garden designs, where its color can be used to create contrast and draw the eye.

Expert Tip:

I like pairing this with cooler toned plants like blue succulents or silver foliage so the red really stands out. Pairings include Artemisia David's Choice, Blue Spruce Stonecrop, or Agave Blue Glow.  It also works well spilling around the base of larger focal plants where it can add that warm color without competing for height.
