Pachypodium lamerei, commonly known as Madagascar Palm, is a striking and unusual plant that combines the look of a palm with the rugged character of a succulent. Native to Madagascar, it features a thick, upright trunk covered in sharp spines, topped with a crown of long, narrow green leaves.

The contrast between the spiny trunk and the soft, tropical looking foliage gives this plant a really unique presence. It works especially well as a focal point, whether planted in the ground in warm climates or grown in a container where its form can be appreciated up close.

As it matures, it can develop into a small tree like shape, with the trunk thickening and the leafy canopy becoming more pronounced. Under the right conditions, older plants may produce fragrant white flowers near the top, though this is more common in ideal climates or container grown specimens.

It grows best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained soil. Like many succulents, it prefers a more controlled watering schedule, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root issues.

In the ground, Pachypodium lamerei can reach 10 to 20 feet tall over time, though it often stays smaller in containers. It is well suited for USDA zones 10 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, typically tolerating temperatures down to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is semi evergreen and may drop during cooler periods or drought. This plant has made it's way into many Xeriscapes here in Southern California.

This plant is considered toxic and can cause serious illness if ingested. If any part of this plant is consumed, contact poison control immediately. It should be planted with caution around pets and children.

It does not typically attract pollinators unless in bloom.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, though its spines are usually enough to discourage browsing.

Pachypodium lamerei fits especially well into succulent gardens, desert style plantings, and modern landscapes, where its bold, sculptural form can be used as a standout feature.

With its dramatic trunk, unique appearance, and low water needs, this is a plant that instantly adds character and a bit of edge to the garden.
