Euphorbia tirucalli ‘Sticks on Fire’, often called Pencil Cactus or Fire Sticks, is one of those plants that instantly grabs attention. It’s all about color and form, with upright, pencil thin stems that shift from green to bright orange and red, especially in full sun or cooler weather.

The structure is very different from most plants. Instead of leaves, it’s made up of smooth, cylindrical stems that branch and create an almost coral-like silhouette. It adds a strong vertical element while still feeling light and open.

Because of its bold color, it works really well as a focal point or as contrast against softer greens and blues. It’s often used in succulent gardens, modern landscapes, or anywhere you want something that stands out without needing flowers.

It thrives in full sun and needs well drained soil. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and handles heat and dry conditions with ease. It’s a great fit for low water landscapes.

Over time, it can grow into a large shrub, often reaching 6 to 10 feet tall and several feet wide depending on conditions. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, with damage possible below around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant is evergreen in mild climates. 

One very important thing to be aware of is the sap. Like other euphorbias, it produces a milky latex sap that is highly toxic. It can cause severe skin irritation and can be especially dangerous if it comes into contact with the eyes. It’s important to use gloves and eye protection when pruning or handling the plant, and to plant it away from high traffic areas where accidental contact could occur.

This plant has high toxicity and should be planted with caution around pets and children.

The flowers are small and not particularly noticeable.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a durable option for low maintenance plantings.

Euphorbia ‘Sticks on Fire’ fits especially well into desert, Mediterranean, and modern garden designs, where its color and structure can be used as a bold focal point.

I like using this as a statement piece where you want color without relying on blooms. It really lights up in full sun, especially in winter. Just be mindful of placement. I try to keep it away from walkways or areas where people might brush up against it because of the sap.
