- Agave americana, commonly known as Century Plant, is one of the most recognizable architectural plants you can use in a dry landscape. It’s bold, sculptural, and makes a statement the moment you see it.
- The plant forms a large rosette of thick, blue green leaves that radiate outward in a strong, symmetrical pattern. Each leaf is lined with sharp spines and ends in a pronounced tip, giving it that classic agave look. It’s not a subtle plant, but that’s exactly the point.
- Over time, it can become quite large, both in height and spread, and will often produce offsets around the base, slowly expanding its footprint. It works best as a focal point or in areas where it has room to grow without crowding nearby plants or walkways.
- Like other agaves, it is monocarpic. After many years, it will send up a massive flower stalk that can reach impressive heights before the main rosette eventually declines. The bloom is dramatic and can attract pollinators such as bees.
- Agave americana thrives in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and handles heat, reflected light, and tough conditions with ease.
- It can reach 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, sometimes larger with age. It is well suited for USDA zones 8 through 11 and is hardy down to around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen.
- This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.
- It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, as the tough, spiny leaves naturally discourage browsing.
- Agave americana fits especially well into Mediterranean, desert, and modern garden designs, where its bold form can be used to anchor a space.

- I always think about scale with this one. It starts off manageable, but it doesn’t stay that way for long. I like placing it where it has room to grow into its full size, otherwise you end up fighting it later. When you give it that space, it really becomes a centerpiece.
