Agave vilmoriniana, commonly known as Octopus Agave, is a sculptural, fast growing agave that brings a softer, more fluid look compared to the rigid form of most agaves. Its unique shape makes it a standout focal point in any planting.

The leaves are long, narrow, and spineless, arching and twisting as they grow. This creates a flowing, almost tentacle like form that gives the plant its common name. The overall look is much more relaxed and dynamic than traditional agaves.

It forms a single rosette that can grow fairly quickly, developing into a bold, upright specimen. Like other agaves, it will eventually send up a tall flower spike at maturity, after which the main plant will decline.

Because of its softer form, it works especially well in designs where you want structure without harsh lines. It pairs nicely with both modern and naturalistic plantings.

Agave vilmoriniana grows best in full sun and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and performs well in hot, dry conditions.

It typically grows about 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, forming a large, open rosette. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost. The foliage is evergreen.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children, especially compared to more spiny agaves.

The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.

Agave vilmoriniana fits especially well into Mediterranean, desert, and modern garden designs, where its form can be used as a focal point or structural contrast.

It pairs well with plants like Hesperaloe parviflora to add vertical movement and seasonal bloom, Myoporum parvifolium ‘Putah Creek’ to soften the base with a low, spreading layer, and Aeonium ‘Sunburst’ to introduce contrast in both color and rosette form.

Expert Tip:

I like using this as a focal point where you want something sculptural. The softer, spineless leaves make it easier to place closer to walkways or seating areas, but still make sure to give it space to spread it's 'tentacles'!
