• Agave desmettiana ‘Variegata’ is a softer, more refined agave that brings brightness and structure into the landscape without the harsh, rigid feel of larger species. Its variegation makes it especially useful for adding contrast and lifting the overall palette.
• The leaves are smooth, arching, and slightly more flexible than many agaves, with creamy yellow centers and green margins. The overall form is still architectural, but it has a more relaxed, flowing quality compared to stiffer varieties.
• It forms a symmetrical rosette that can grow fairly quickly, making it a strong focal point even at a younger size. Because it lacks the aggressive spines of other agaves, it’s easier to place in areas closer to walkways or seating.
• Like other agaves, it will eventually send up a tall flower spike at maturity, after which the main plant declines, though offsets often develop around the base.
• Agave desmettiana ‘Variegata’ grows best in full sun to partial shade and requires well drained soil. Once established, it is drought tolerant and performs well in warm, dry conditions.
• It typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, forming a full, upright rosette. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11. The foliage is evergreen.
• This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children, though placement should still consider the pointed leaf tips.
• The flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.
• It is generally deer and rabbit resistant.
• Agave desmettiana ‘Variegata’ fits especially well into Mediterranean, desert, and modern garden designs, where its color and form can be used as a focal point or to brighten a planting.
• It pairs well with plants like Sedum ‘Cape Blanco’ for a soft, silvery ground layer that complements the variegation, Sedum rubrotinctum to introduce warm contrast at the base, and Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’ to create a bold dark counterpoint that really makes the lighter tones pop.  Add Pennisetum as a textural contrast.

• I like using this when I want the look of an agave without it feeling too sharp or aggressive. It’s a great option near patios or walkways, and giving it a little space helps show off that softer, arching form.
