Native to Europe and western Asia, Vinca minor, commonly known as Periwinkle or Dwarf Myrtle, has long been used as a dependable groundcover for shaded garden spaces. It’s especially valued for its ability to spread steadily and create a dense, evergreen carpet with very little effort.

The foliage is made up of small, glossy, deep green leaves that hold their color year round in mild climates. In spring, the plant comes alive with violet blue flowers scattered across the surface, adding a soft wash of color that can continue to appear intermittently through summer.

This is one of those plants that really shines in difficult areas. It’s a great choice for planting under trees, along shaded slopes, or anywhere you need reliable coverage that helps keep weeds down. Over time, it forms a thick, uniform layer by rooting along its trailing stems.

Vinca minor is happiest in partial to full shade, though it can handle some sun in cooler conditions. It prefers well drained soil and benefits from regular watering while getting established. Once settled in, it becomes fairly drought tolerant and requires very little upkeep.

It stays low, usually around 4 to 6 inches tall, but spreads outward several feet as it fills in. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9 and is very cold hardy. The foliage remains evergreen in milder climates. Although sources show this plant up to zone 9, we see it thriving in zone 10 here in Southern California as well, which is why we have include these zones in the description.

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, which adds to its reputation as an easy, low maintenance option.

Vinca minor fits naturally into woodland, cottage, and Mediterranean style gardens, especially where you need to soften shaded areas or create a consistent ground layer.
