Carex buchananii, often called Leatherleaf Sedge, brings a completely different color palette into the garden. Instead of greens or blues, this grass like plant leans into warm coppery brown tones that almost glow in the right light.

Native to New Zealand, it forms upright, fine textured clumps with slender, arching blades that give it a slightly wild, windswept look. It’s not overly tidy—and that’s part of its charm. It adds movement and a more natural feel compared to more structured grasses.

This is a great plant to use for contrast. The warm, earthy color pairs really well with silvers, greens, and even purples, helping break up more traditional planting schemes. It works nicely in small groups, mixed borders, or tucked into more naturalistic designs.

It prefers full sun to partial shade and does best in well drained soil. Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant, though it will look better with occasional watering, especially in hotter inland areas.

Carex buchananii typically grows about 1 to 2 feet tall and wide, forming a loose, upright clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 7 through 10 and is hardy down to around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates. 

This plant has low toxicity and is generally a safe choice for gardens with pets and children.

The flowers are not particularly showy but may add minor seasonal interest.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance landscapes.

Carex buchananii fits especially well into Mediterranean, modern, and naturalistic garden designs, where its unique color and texture can be used to add contrast and movement.
