Vinca major, commonly known as Periwinkle, is one of those plants that really earns its place by doing the tough jobs well. If you’ve got a tricky area—shade, slopes, or spots where not much wants to grow—this is often a go to.

It spreads quickly with long, trailing stems that root as they go, forming a dense, leafy groundcover. The foliage is larger and a bit more open compared to Vinca minor, with soft green leaves that create a lush, layered look.

In spring, you’ll get a flush of violet blue flowers scattered across the plant. They’re simple but bright, and they tend to reappear here and there through the warmer months, especially with a little water.

This is a great plant for covering ground fast—under trees, along fences, or on slopes where erosion is a concern. It’s not overly delicate, and once it gets established, it does a good job of crowding out weeds.

It handles a range of light conditions, from partial shade to full shade, and can tolerate some sun in milder climates. It prefers well drained soil but isn’t particularly fussy. With regular watering it will grow more vigorously, but it can also handle some dry periods once established.

Growth is typically low, around 6 to 12 inches tall, but it can spread several feet over time. It is well suited for USDA zones 7 through 10 and is fairly adaptable in mild climates. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

The flowers can attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, though occasional browsing may occur.

Vinca major fits especially well into woodland, cottage, and Mediterranean style gardens, where it can be used to quickly fill in space and soften the landscape.

If you need something that spreads, covers ground, and doesn’t require much babysitting, this is a reliable option.
