Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’, commonly known as Golden Sweet Flag, is a low growing, grass-like perennial that brings bright color and soft texture into the landscape. It’s especially effective for adding contrast and movement in moist or partially shaded areas.

The foliage is narrow, arching, and vibrant yellow to chartreuse, forming a dense, flowing clump. The bright coloration helps illuminate darker planting areas and pairs well with deeper greens.

It has a soft, tufted habit that works well along edges, in containers, or as a groundcover in areas where a lighter texture is needed.

Unlike true grasses, it maintains a more refined, controlled appearance and does not become invasive.

Acorus ‘Ogon’ grows best in partial shade to full sun with consistent moisture and prefers well drained to slightly wet soil. It performs especially well near water features or in irrigated areas.

It typically reaches about 8 to 12 inches tall and spreads 12 to 18 inches wide, forming a compact, arching clump. It is well suited for USDA zones 5 through 9, however it is also seen thriving here in Southern California which is why we have included zone 10. The foliage is evergreen to semi evergreen depending on climate.

This plant has low toxicity and is generally safe for gardens with pets and children.

It does not produce showy flowers and is grown primarily for its foliage.

It is generally deer resistant.

Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ fits especially well into woodland, Japanese-inspired, and water-wise (with irrigation) garden designs, where its bright color can be used to create contrast and soften edges.

It pairs well with plants like Carex oshimensis ‘Evergold’ to reinforce a variegated palette, Heuchera ‘Crimson Curls’ to add deep color contrast, and Liriope spicata ‘Silver Dragon’ to create a layered, textured groundcover.
