Kalanchoe beharensis, often called Velvet Elephant Ear, is one of those plants that instantly catches your attention. Native to Madagascar, it has a bold, almost whimsical look thanks to its large, triangular leaves covered in a soft, velvety texture.

The foliage is a muted gray green with a slightly fuzzy surface that gives it a dusty, sculptural quality. As the plant matures, it develops a branching, tree like form, which makes it feel more like a living piece of art than a typical succulent.

This is a plant that really shines when given space to stand on its own, but it can also be used in mixed plantings where you want something unusual to break up more common textures. You’ll actually see it used in different areas around Disneyland in Southern California, where its quirky, almost storybook appearance fits perfectly into more imaginative landscape designs.

In ideal conditions, mature plants may produce small clusters of yellowish flowers, though the foliage is definitely the main attraction.

It grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soil. In hotter inland areas, a bit of afternoon shade can help prevent leaf stress. Like most succulents, it does best with moderate watering and should be allowed to dry out between waterings.

Kalanchoe beharensis can eventually reach 6 to 12 feet tall and several feet wide, especially in warm climates where it can develop into a small tree form. It is well suited for USDA zones 9 through 11 and is sensitive to frost, tolerating temperatures down to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The foliage is evergreen. 

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

When in bloom, the flowers may attract pollinators such as bees.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a dependable option for low maintenance plantings.

Kalanchoe beharensis fits especially well into succulent gardens, tropical, and themed landscapes, where its unique shape and texture can be used to create a more playful or dramatic effect.

With its velvety leaves, unusual form, and standout personality, this is a great plant for adding something a little unexpected to the garden.
