Hedera helix ‘Variegata’, commonly known as Variegated English Ivy, is a classic evergreen vine valued for its bright, contrasting foliage and vigorous growth. The leaves feature a mix of deep green centers with creamy white edges, adding a lighter, more decorative look compared to standard green ivy.

This plant is highly versatile and can be used as a climbing vine on walls, fences, and trellises, or allowed to spread as a dense groundcover. It is especially useful for softening hard surfaces or filling in shaded areas with year round greenery.

Variegated English Ivy performs best in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some sun in cooler climates. It prefers well drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once established, it becomes fairly drought tolerant and very low maintenance.

It has a vigorous growth habit, with vines capable of reaching 20 to 50 feet or more if given support, while also spreading outward along the ground. It is well suited for USDA zones 4 through 9 and is very cold hardy. We often see this plant throughout zone 10 as well.  The foliage is evergreen.

Mature plants may produce small greenish flowers followed by dark berries, which can attract pollinators and birds, though this typically occurs on older growth.

This plant has some toxicity and may cause irritation or illness if ingested, so it is best to plant with care around pets and children.

It is generally deer and rabbit resistant, making it a durable choice for challenging areas.

With its bright variegation, versatility, and ability to cover space quickly, Variegated English Ivy is a reliable option for adding contrast and a finished look to both vertical and ground level spaces.
